Holiday Activism - December 23, 2024

Social Media Resistance - Extending Our Reach

We mocked Trump's terrible cabinet choices at our Holiday Party and many of us have already written and called the Senate to weigh in. After the New Year we'll do more to raise questions and highlight flaws in various nominees as their hearings begin.  But with Congress now in recess, it's a good time to reach out to our fellow Americans instead.

If you regularly post on Facebook, X, Bluesky, Instagram, Tiktok, WhatsApp or Linked In, the folks at Demcast have made it very easy to share your objections to the current crop of nominees.  Click here to find eye-catching critiques of Bondi, Gabbard, RFK, Hegseth & Patel.  Pick your favorite social media outlet, download, and help build a groundswell of opposition in your extended networks.

Don't Let Florida's Kids Go Hungry

If you think it's important for children in low income households to have fresh food even when school's out, join a state-wide campaign to support Florida's participation in SUNBucks. Funded largely with federal dollars, the SUN Bucks program provides eligible families $40/child for each of the 3 summer months. Participating states only have to pay half the administrative costs of the program. Last year Florida was one of 12 GOP-dominated states that refused the program. The deadline to opt in for next year is January 1 and so far the Florida Department of Children and Families has not acted. The Florida Policy Institute is running a letter campaign urging lawmakers to accept SUN Bucks.

A simple paragraph urging support for the program and reminding your Rep and Senator of the January 1 deadline is all that's needed. More than 1,000 letters have been sent already. For those of us at the Beaches, this means writing Rep Kiyan Michael and Senator Clay Yarborough.  Once you've written that note, send it to DeSantis, too.
